Great words to live by: "Pay (good deeds) back. It works." That was Bea Cohen's life philosophy. For Bea Abrams Cohen, life was all about "mitzvah," the Jewish tradition of doing a good deed. If more folks conducted their daily affairs with this over-riding philosophy, undoubtedly, we'd have a lot less social problems.

Great story, SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S.. Thanks for sharing it with us. The part that speaks to me very much is this:

"Cohen, deeply grateful that America welcomed her family, wanted to find a way to show her gratitude. So she joined the U.S. war effort.

"'I wanted to pay back for being an American,' Cohen told The Times in a 2012 interview. "

That was a different time and a different way of thinking. Nowadays things are much different. I think I prefer the mindset of Bea Abrams' day.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. I too am a Thankful American. Recently I had to look up something on my Father. I never knew him, he died when I was 6 months old. No one ever spoke of him really except for my Aunt, his sister. What I found out by contacting the Cemetery was that my father had been an Interpreter in Czecheslovochia and had received the Bronze star, and Purple Heart in addition he had had a metal plate in his skull. He was a WWII hero.
