The Space Badge is not new. There are 3 tier's -- basic, senior, master -- and it's awarded to Soldier's serving in space billets. Threats in space are very real, regardless of how many people like mocking the "Space Force."
I wouldn't say there are a lot of Space Badge personnel in the US Army, more so in the Space Force and Air Force. I'd be willing to bet the majority of Space Badge holders within the Army are at Peterson or any other space based billet.

I was AFSPC in my last reserve duty assignment and everyone had one. I rarely saw them anywhere else in the Air Force. You might bump into one at an Air Operations Center, but that was about it. It's a very geographically contained occupational badge.

I’ve seen them quite a bit at Fort Carson. A few Warrants but mostly SNCO 35G’s.
They've been around since 2005. No, they're not very common. I've seen maybe 4-5 of them around the Army in 20+ years.
