Normally I would agree with that sentiment. However, in this particular instance, I would state that even if you *can* do the time, don't do the crime(s).
I understand that "war is hell." And from their point of view, they were engaged in a war with the western world. However, even under those circumstances, there is STILL no justification for the crimes he has confessed to.
