About 30 minutes ago I added an adjunct video to Maj William W. 'Bill' Price's APOD for 8.23.2021. The subject of that video is the Hubble Space Telescope's imaging of Abell 3827, which ties nicely with Bill's APOD... But further, it addresses the subject of Gravitational Lensing... and this is what I am presenting to you in this Science Video... Your host on this video is Matthew John O'Dowd, an Australian astrophysicist. He is an associate professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Lehman College of the City University of New York and writer and host of PBS Space Time on YouTube. He is a frequent guest on Science Goes to the Movies on CUNY TV and on StarTalk radio with Neil deGrasse Tyson.
O’Dowd attended The University of Melbourne, beginning his Bachelor’s in Science in 1992 and concluding in 1994 with a major in physics. In 1995, he completed his First Class Honours in Physics. In 2003, he completed his Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics with his thesis, titled: ‘The Host Galaxies of Radio-loud AGN’
Dr. O'Dowd will take you on a very interesting journey of how galaxy's and other dense celestial objects bend light and this is now known as Gravitational Lensing!
I suggest you watch this FULL SCREEN WITH SOUND MODERATE so that you can see the amazing graphics and follow the discussion... You will then have a better understanding of some the principles of Astrophysics...
I hope you enjoy it!
Kerry
