There are several tactics that translate to the modern battlefield. So much to learn from the past!

There are some accounts of Greek, Roman, the Huns, Chinese, Japanese and several others - just less from a first person view.

Upton's the Armies of Europe and Asia were the reports he wrote for Sherman - when Sherman sent him around the globe looking at armies and their staffs. he gave a great bit of detail on the Austrian Army - and was able to ply from it alot of the details the Austrians themselves did not state.
