Why Perseverance's First Mars Drilling Attempt Came Up Empty

The lack of compaction, little to no moisture, and uncertainty as to how the sampling tool is actually working, it should be expected to come up empty on some sampling. Science is nothing but uncertainty.

Maybe they should drill laterally, instead of down. You can see the vehicle tracks on the surface so it should have been oblivious they were drilling 'dustcake'.
