Great article. It was because of conflicts like these and many others that I felt I had to push back against the notion of "4th Generation warfare" the MCWL was pushing ~ 2010 timeframe. They had invited a few speakers from the warfighting lab to give a presentation at MARFORCOM on the topic and a pet theory of theirs. They argued that the insurgencies we were seeing in the middle east at the time and other aspects of asymmetrical combat were some kind of new style of warfare. I reminded them that the Marine Corps had wrote the book on that kind of warfare (Small Wars Manual) and that it predated 1st Generation, line and column style warfare. But I was only an enlisted scrub, so they quickly told me to sit down. My objections were not polite to our guests... which I didn't think was the point, but there it is.
