Capitol riot: Officers describe racial slurs at 6 January hearing

Police officers who fought back against Trump supporters at the US Capitol on 6 January have given evidence about the violence and hatred they experienced.

They were testifying at the first hearing of a Congressional committee set up to investigate the attack.

Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, who is black, said he was taunted with a racial epithet by the mob.

At least 535 rioters have been arrested so far, but prosecutors have only secured a few convictions.

The inquiry is being conducted almost entirely by Democrats, after most Republicans boycotted the committee.

However, two Republicans - Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger - have broken ranks to join the investigation.

"If those responsible are not held accountable... this will remain a cancer on our constitutional republic," Ms Cheney said as the hearing began.

The select committee was formed after Republicans objected to an independent commission like the one that investigated the 11 September 2001 attacks.

It is horrible what these heroes faced. But what is more horrible is that there are former military on here who support those who tried to overthrow our government.

It is horrible what police officers n a lot of our major cities faced. It was brutal. police were being ambushed, while holding the line against protesters the police were told protesters were going to rape and kill their wives and daughters while the protesters held pictures of the officers families. Officers faced being spit n, having lasers shined n their eyes etc. Then Democratic politicians raised money to bail these SOBs out of jail. Even VP Kamala Harris raised money for the arrested protesters.

SPC Jesse Davis - I posted this link earlier, but it has additional content to your argument. Many of the charges from Portland riots got dropped due to lack of evidence or admissible testimony. In the January 6th attack, the suspects posted on social media and Capitol Police officers specifically mention receiving racial slurs alongside physical battery
