The problem is this perception that the military is apolitical. This has really never been in the case. It's been political from the start.
The Civil War, in everything from emancipation (and creation/use of the Buffalo Soldiers) and Sherman's March were very politically motivated.
It was political when integrating, when interracial marriage was still illegal.
It was political when taking the correct side of the fight for desegregation.
It was political when integrating women.
Political in accepting lgbt people.
Political in being outspoken about issues of sexism.
Political in how many components of the UCMJ are about moral conduct and decorum.
Political when leaders spoke out against Truman's use of the bomb against Japan.
Political when murdering students in the Kent State Massacre.
Political as FUCK when deployed against the Civil Rights Movement.
Political when coercing sports associations to play the national anthem, a trend that started post-911, despite the goldfish memory of conservatives.
Political in it's advisory role of how the military is portrayed in Hollywood (it literally needs permission to portray the US military in any media, and you better believe DoD is telling them what is or isn't allowed).
Political in how it lobbies congress for funding and where it decides to spend those funds.
The entire military industrial complex is a massive political apparatus.
And yes, it is very political when taking a stance against flagrant abuse by a President to bend the military against it's core values.
Don't even get me started on any and all collaboration with the CIA.

It's always been political. Trump is only unique for being the only modern era President to try strong-arming them for a personal agenda. Leaders are right to speak out against it.

The military has always led the way, always been ahead of society on matters of justice. This isn't new.

GEN Milley may be right or wrong, but when the perception of impropriety is breached, it is time to go.
