A Marine recently received his own Purple Heart after 16 years, so I suppose we could say it's improving.

Racism may very well have affected this Soldier who was wounded in the line of duty, in service in war for our country, and he deserves all due reverence and respect for what he did and experienced.

However it also highlights an important issue, why even in this modern era of electronic filing and high speed communication are our service members still falling through the cracks for awards they have earned and deserve for their service?

16 years for a Purple Heart for a wounded Marine in the Global War on Terrorism is appalling, at least with this old Soldier of the Second World War can be explained away. Racism, poor records management, limited communication, etc. Today, it can not be explained away outside of poor leadership and laziness.
