I suspect that most early mariners engaged in piracy when the opportunity presented it and I doubt that the behavior of the Drake's were worst than the Cortez's. It was in general a brutal period of the world and military conquest often involved wholesale slaughter. The English were coming off a series of nasty civil wars and continual incidents with Spain, the Spanish had just shortly before conquered the last Moorish stronghold in Spain, the Spanish Conquistadors were generally former soldiers/mercenaries from the Moorish Wars.
