I suspect that most early mariners engaged in piracy when the opportunity presented it and I doubt that the behavior of the Drake's were worst than the Cortez's. It was in general a brutal period of the world and military conquest often involved wholesale slaughter. The English were coming off a series of nasty civil wars and continual incidents with Spain, the Spanish had just shortly before conquered the last Moorish stronghold in Spain, the Spanish Conquistadors were generally former soldiers/mercenaries from the Moorish Wars.

Thank you my friend SGT (Join to see) for making us aware that on June 17, 1579 English navigator Francis Drake landed on the coast of California at Drakes Bay (some say San Francisco Bay), and named it "New Albion".

One of the family Ancestors from my Mother's side of the family. Maybe he's the reason that my son joined the Navy rather than follow me into the Army.
