General Pershing’s experience in the Philippines convinced him that the Army needed a new sidearm, one that had stopping power, a large caliber handgun that could knock a man down and be quickly reloaded. He consulted John Moses Browning, a former Army officer and firearm designer, who came up with a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol that stored its ammunition in a removable magazine, thus drastically reducing the time required for reloading. We know the weapon now as the M1911 pistol. Over a hundred years later, it is still in use in some elements of our Armed Forces today.
