On May 20, 1570, the first atlas 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' (Theatre of the World), was published by Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp with 70 maps. Ortelius was one of the first cartographers to credit other map makers.

Christian sea captains had to hide all maps that didn't conform to the world as described in the Bible. Carrying anything else was considered heresy. Of course, sea captains couldn't sail safely from port to port using the church approved map, so they went to great pains to hide their navigation charts
