Love Step 1: Plan. I have coached veterans with their transition who really hadn't thought about what they would do after military life (personally or professionally). While what you may desire six months before you leave and the day of discharge can certainly change, it is important to, at least, be thinking about your personal and professional goals, strengths, and a game plan on how to reach them. It is easier to revise a plan in place vs. starting from scratch at the finish line.
I would also recommend including a mentor outside of the military who truly has your best interest at heart. This is an individual who isn't helping you chase jobs, but coaching you on how to create a fulfilling professional and PERSONAL life. The transition can be easier when you are proactive in planning and have taken the time to identify barriers that might hinder your success.
