On May 21, 1932, five years to the day that Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic and after flying for 17 hours from Newfoundland, Amelia Earhart landed near Londonderry, Northern Ireland, completing the first trans-Atlantic solo flight by a woman.
"Amelia Earhart is one of the most prominent icons of the 20th century. She was a pioneering female pilot, determined and independent, and a supporter of women’s rights. Her numerous aviation firsts and her disappearance during an attempt to fly around the globe in 1937 have ensured her status as a legend."
