One day during basic my sinuses and the weather at FT Leonard Wood had me feeling pretty damn crappy and I left my weapon against a tree. The ART15 that followed ensured I did not make the same mistake in Afghanistan. That weapons immersion we had trained me well and got walls painted and trees planted after duty hours that needed the extra duty fools.

MAJ Byron Oyler - In 2004 we did not have weapons immersion at basic in FLW. We only got them when we went to the range and went out to the field. In the FTXs we had them all the time. That's it.

Are they doing this at all basic training sites? Seems so reactionary vs proactively better selecting out folk who may not be cut out for this.

COL (Join to see) The headline reads: "No guns for Fort Jackson trainees after school bus hijacking" And from the article: "The Army’s largest basic training post paused weapons immersion training after one trainee escaped May 6 and hijacked a school bus with an unloaded M4 carbine, officials at Fort Jackson, in South Carolina, said Thursday evening."

It's just Jackson. And they're just pausing it. It doesn't sound like it's indefinite.

My question is, did he sneak off the range with his m-4. And walk down the street until he found a bus to hijack? Don't change any rules except at the range and hold the range master accountable. And all the NCOs responsible Squad, Platoon, and Company. Army basic training for non-infantry in 72 we picked up and left our m16s at the range.

Read the article. The trainee sneaked out during personal hygiene and barracks cleanup after PT. Weapons immersion policy means 24/7 with rifle with issuance almost right after arrival from reception
