I will take this opportunity to describe something very few Americans know about how compassionate and generous Americans were after WWII. Millions in Europe were at risk of starving to death. Sometimes a German family had a loaf of bread for the family for the week. Americans spent in today's money $140 to send millions of large food packages to various European countries for a few years. Some Germans were resentful for losing the war and had qualms accepting the food packages, but once they opened packages they found various sundry foods and it was like Christamas to them. These are the contents of the packages.
one pound (450 g) of beef in broth
one pound (450 g) of steak and kidneys
8 ounces (230 g) of liver loaf
8 ounces (230 g) of corned beef
12 ounces (340 g) of luncheon loaf (like Spam)
8 ounces (230 g) of bacon
two pounds (910 g) of margarine
one pound (450 g) of lard
one pound (450 g) of fruit preserves
one pound (450 g) of honey
one pound (450 g) of raisins
one pound (450 g) of chocolate
two pounds (910 g) of sugar
8 ounces (230 g) of powdered eggs
two pounds (910 g) of whole-milk powder
two pounds (910 g) of coffee
European school children also received care packages for lunch. Sometimes little girls would get a doll in their package and pencils. This program helped me to decide to donate to food pantries. It helped me view the country with more compassion and increased my generosity. Millions of Americans are going hungry to include children. Sometimes the parents will not eat so their kids can eat. One single mother was caught stealing food to feed her children. Nobody in this country should go hungry. I wish we in general are more compassionate and generous.
