*Deconstruction/Recycling* —-> Big deal @ (former) Fort Ord (and elsewhere). Some primo old growth had high end contractors jockeying for planks. Miss those ocean front views that the base offered.

From building aircraft parts during times of metal scarcity to educating Department of Defense employees on the best ways to package materiel for shipment to the front lines of World War II, researchers at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) have always been willing to lend a hand to support the military in a time of need.

Thank you for the post, PO1 William "Chip" Nagel. But I'm honestly shocked they went forward with the demolition. I can only guess why these historic buildings aren't classified as "historic buildings". But these are part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)'s history.
That would be as if they decided to demolish the WWII barracks out here at Fort Leonard Wood because "they're intended for temporary use". These buildings are part of the outdoor exhibit of the Engineer/MP/Chemical Regiment Museum. It's a part of who we are. Call me a no-nothing Screaming Eagle, but this is really depressing.

Saving a couple buildings as a museum piece is one thing, but the WWII era barracks at Leonard Wood, Campbell, Knox and Benning were antiquated in the 80's and 90's. I don't think many Basic or OSUT students cried when they tore down most of Harmony Church and I doubt many officers will miss the Quads at Benning. I went to EOAC at Leonard Wood after they moved the Engineer Officer course there and the new quarters were a lot more pleasant.

We have preserved some of these barracks at various base museums so we don't need all of them.
