Camp Pendleton is first to train young infantry Marines for a new type of fight

That is all fine and dandy. Of course Marines should know how to swim. What interests me is the transformation of the Marine Corps mission from amphibious landings to smaller units potentially occupying islands through force to protect the navy. I don't know what a "smaller unit" is. What happens when the island is like Okinawa or Iwo Jima with tens of thousands of enemy soldiers waiting for them?
