Back in the 80's I knew several Marines who failed the Navy's tape standard which affected their fitreps resulting in getting passed over for promotions. Most that failed were in peak physical shape with extremely low body fat and scored 300 on their PFTs. They just had big necks.

Their was always the body fat measurement waiver. As long as you were under 18% body fat, you were good to go. I was always within 2-3 lbs (+/-) of the standard max weight for height.

I never opted for the tape estimate, which is only slighter better than a scientific wild ass guess. Nor did I use the skin fold calipers "guesstimate." I always used the full body immersion method. I always had my waiver sitting in my cover when there was an IG or CG. But I never was asked for it until I got on the scale (my body fat was never over 10%, typically closer to 8%. I understand that the electrical impedance method is even more accurate than full-body immersion.

Hopefully a *real* fitness *alarm clock* will go off to the benefit of one or more branches, in the meantime, there always = smoke and mirrors and incense and peppermints, the plethora of profiles, waivers and exemptions notwithstanding.
