Unfortunately true. There are outliers, to be sure, but most young men with no strong father figure will turn to other means to gain the approbation of an older man.

Yes, unsurprising. Men have on average 17 times as much testosterone as women. Testosterone is a double-edged sword...gains in muscle mass, but also gains in sexual drive and violence. Rebuke any 16-year-old-boy and you'll see it come out. Dads help their sons handle their sexual drive and violent tendencies...often through sports, but also with real, short discussions. Dads are one of the key fixes for the inner city gang and generational welfare problems. Young men need a father figure, and they'll get one, either in their own dad or in the nearest gang leader.

You nailed my child hood. Col Joseph Lenertz I was born in 1947, and the last person I didn't want to disappoint was my father. He was a WWII gunners mate and I wanted to be very much the man he was and I wanted him to be proud of me. I was a very young teen and was feeling my oats. When I joined the Navy in 1966, the war in Vietnam was raging. He told me he was happy I joined the navy, and his exact words were " I am Glad, now maybe you will grow up!" I never held that against him. And thus my 23 year career started in the Navy. E-1 to CWO3. He lived long enough to see me retire from the Navy after 23 years of service. I thin what you said is 100% correct!
