Owning a gun/weapon involves and requires a great deal of responsibility not least of which is properly securing the weapon. Incidents like this are so preventable if one takes the time to think things through.

You are so right SP5 (Join to see). If you want to have it accessible when there are kids around there are small handgun safes or it is on your person. When my grandkids are around the only time a firearm is out of the safes is when it is on my person. No exceptions.
I have already had discussions with them regarding if they ever were to find an unsecured firearm. Soon I will take the oldest two out on a friend's range with some milk jugs full of colored liquid, to show them what one of my rounds will do.i did this up on our farm in NC with my two boys, the lesson stuck.

Maj Robert Thornton - I did the same thing with my kids and grand kids but I used watermelons. I borrowed from the old 80's commercial about your brain on drugs. I set up the melons, came back to the firing line and told them "that's your brains, pointing at the melons, then I showed them the 1911A1. Then said watch, this is your brain on a 45ACP. They got the message.

My cousin's two year old shot his one year old brother. Thankfully he was not killed. Weapons should be secured.

There may be a right to carry firearms but also the safety of those weapons MUST be observed. You ARE still liable for the unsafe storage and use of any unsecured firearm. When there are children around they can't be expected to know the danger and as in this case the results can be fatal. If You cannot handle and store the firearms safely You are not responsible enough to have them.
