First: I would like our Asian allies to spend more to build up their militaries. The US is in a rut of buying on credit.
Second. Taiwan is so close to China that the Chinese military does not have to maneuver far to attack Taiwan, and makes it much easier to support Chinese achieving military objectives and logistics. The Chinese will have missiles and planes to increase the stand off distance of our forces and the navy.

If the US did fight to defend Taiwan the island would be reduce to a smoking ruin and half of the population would be dead. I am not at all sure the Taiwanese would want that.
