Given how many reservists, retirees and vets just tried to storm the capitol, combined with our public mishandling of Sexual Assault, mysterious deaths and Soldier dissapearance cases, how could trust in the institution NOT be eroded?

The latest number of vets (of all types) who rioted on 6 Jan, according to NPR, is 27. 27 out of the existing pool of 18 Million veterans is 0.00015 percent of the veteran population. (numbers from US Census Bureau). This does NOT represent a significant slice of the military.

Col Joseph Lenertz - 27 vets on public tv, being seen around the world, send a much louder message than millions of veterans sitting quietly in the background.
For better or worse, we are all ambassadors of the military.

Poor leadership is definitely on the top 5 reasons. I'd also argue how the military is being utilized, as well as some of the changes being made don't necessarily benefit troops at the unit level.

I second that! I stay busy on with my civilian job with how many troops are getting out. When I got here in 2017 we had 234 troops, now we are down to 150 and continuing to go down.

The media makes every mistake, every fired commander, and every crime committed by a service member into a headline. The vast majority of honorable service members who demonstrate sacrifice and integrity every day...well, that doesn't deserve headlines, because it doesn't sell.

SSG Robert Perrotto - You know why the media focuses on chaos, destruction, etc? That's what people want. People WANT the chaos, the destruction, murders, etc. There's been studies done on this.

https://qz.com/307214/heres-what-happened-when-a-news-site-only-reported-good-news-for-a-day/

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/website-reports-only-good-news-day-loses-two-thirds-its-readers-9905916.html

"The City Reporter, based in Rostov-on-Don, tried to find positives in everything for an entire day on 1 December, or else didn't dwell on the negatives, leading with headlines like 'No disruption on the roads despite snow'.

"Do you feel like you are surrounded by negative information? You don't want to read the news in the morning?" the website asked readers."Do you think good news is a myth? We'll try to prove the opposite tomorrow!"

The result? According to deputy editor Viktoriya Nekrasova, traffic dropped by two-thirds."

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20140728-why-is-all-the-news-bad

In fact I've even noticed when a human interest story is done, there are very few comments, very few reactions. When it's something chaotic, hundreds of comments and reactions.

So blame humans about the way the media reports the news. We are the problem.

SSG Robert Perrotto - So why is it a surprise when the media gives people what they want?

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff - where did I say it was a surprise? I said MSM manipulates perception. If all they give Civilian Jane and Joe is negativity, then that would be the perception presented in polls.
