I grew up in Baltimore (excuse me, "Balmur") long before it became one of America's leading crime centers, and well-remember reading the works of H.L. Mencken. One of my favorite stories about him was told by his friend, Alistair Cooke. While both he and Mencken were covering the 1948 convention of the American Party in Philadelphia, a mob of critics were looking to lynch Mencken for his scathing reviews of the party and its antics. When they returned to the hotel they found the mob loitering outside Mencken's room. Fortunately, the mob didn't recognize Mencken and he was able to infiltrate them. After asking if anyone had checked the door to see if it was locked, he "tried" it (using his key without anyone noticing) and led the mob into his room. While they waited for Mencken's return, Mencken kept ogling one of the girls, a particularly unattractive one wearing a sweater that did nothing for her except to make her itch. At last, Mencken turned to Cooke and commented, "She's the kind of woman that makes one want to go out and burn every bed in the world." One of my favorite books by Mencken was his Christmas Story. I recommend it highly...

I had a few of his books. His analysis on Nietzsche, though flawed, was right on in some of his analyses. CPT Jack Durish
