I am no expert on amphibious operations. I do know they can be contested or uncontested operations. Sometimes they are used to flank the enemy or to put forces in specific locations. Patton conducted an initial amphibious landing in Sicily to put his forces on the island and conducted two more to flank the Germans. At this point the Germans wanted nothing to do with Patton and fled to the port as expeditiously as possible while Patton was in hot pursuit.

It's been 70 years since the surrender agreement dictated Japan limit on military forces, since that time, the Geo/political/miltary landscape has changed. There are only 3 areas in that part of the world, the western side of the pacific, that have democratically elected governments. Two of them are islands, and the third is a peninsula. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. easing the restrictions on Japans military is crucial to to deterring China's ambitions, and easing the strain on US resources and manpower.
