At a time like now, if you have unresolved emotions and things haunting you from the past, the present may be a hard thing to deal with on a day to day basis. As a veteran with PTSD, I know this to be a fact.
The mental health situation in the world is similar to standing in a river. If you are not actively holding to something anchored outside of the current, then by default you will be swept away. Just as if you not actively doing things to keep your mind in a good place by anchoring it in a practice, then you will be swept away into a river of bad habits, negative energy and a blackhole that is very hard to get out of.
When we are triggered, our natural reaction is to run away from the pain, suffering, and trauma because it reminds us of something we don't want to remember from our past.
In the process of running away, we may find temporary relief but we will never find true FREEDOM from the baggage and scars we still carry.
So the only way to find freedom is to face and address the emotions and memories that are calling for our attention. It is much easier said than done and it can seem like a daunting task, but when we do finally man (or woman) up to face them, then and only then can we be free from these emotions and negative patterns of behavior that constantly manifest themselves in our lives.
