I am descended from coal miners and always been drawn to stories of all types of mining. Once, while developing marketing and PR materials for a client building condominiums in Breckenridge, Colorado, I wrote a history of gold mining there. Hydraulic placer mining, bore mining, and dredge mining were all used there. Tailings (huge piles of rock) left by the dredges scar the valley for miles. Blind trout were discovered living in the river still flowing under the tailings. Really fascinating stories including Ben Stanley Rivett, the mining engineer who designed the dredges and oversaw their operation; a shop owned by the bugler from the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean War; and many others are waiting for someone (maybe me) to write them.
