Like Brighton in the UK in the article, in Iowa the predominate tree in towns as well as in the creek bottoms and woodlands was the elm. The American elm was just as susceptible to the blight as its European cousins, and it seemed like almost overnight half the trees in the state died.

...and all the chestnuts are gone since I was a kid. I can just barely remember those beautiful chestnut blooms.

I can imagine that the lack of CO2 in the air required for photosynthesis as akin to humans being delinquent in oxygen or water. Great job keeping cleaning up the environment though!
