Interest article. It also appears to show that the areas that have the highest economic output are mostly in areas that are run by the Democratic Party. That’s probably coincidental and I could be wrong about it.

Moving money around, as in the case of NY, is not production. It's just number in a data base. I'd prefer to see something like this in which product being shipped, the reason the cash is being generated, is the basis of the study. I suspect all these metropolitan areas would appear as black holes in such a study.
