I believe in Desert Storm the first smart weapons were LOS weapons based on accurate targeting. The current generation of smart weapon can actively seek targets. Case in point are large bombs that are dropped which eject many smart cluster bombs. I believe the cluster bombs slow themselves by parachute meters from hard targets like tanks and vehicles and actively seek those targets. I firmly believe these munitions are a revolution in military affairs (RMA)s as a bomber can destroy large formations of enemy armor and vehicles. I also believe they have or will develop 155 rounds that actively seek precise locations. A 155 shooting down a missile is also an imperative as well. RMAs changes the dynamics of warfare but doctrine and tactics must support the use of RMAs properly. An example of not fully reinforcing an RMA was our Sherman tanks. They were hindered by our doctrine they we infantry supporting vehicles, not tank fighting vehicles. Thus the German tanks had a heavy advantage over our Shermans in one on one fights.
