Childhood hero who lost a bit of luster as I learned more about him.

He was a conservative, not a Nazi sympathizer. He went to Germany by presidential request to learn about their air power. He determined the allies couldn't possibly defeat the might of the German air force. That didn't sit well with Roosevelt. When the war started, he emphatically volunteered but his request was rejected. Most people assumed it was because he was sympathetic towards the enemy. But, the truth was if he were to be shot down, the administration didn't think the morale of the nation would be able to recover.
There were other questionable events in his life that surfaced even after his death. Not to make excuses, but the loss of his son really shook him up and he never did quite recover. Even those closest to him thought he needed to get over it. It's easy to understand that attitude until it happens to you personally.
At any rate, the luster was always there; it just got a little dusty.

CPL Douglas Chrysler, I’m afraid I’m not one to give Lindbergh a pass. He fathered seven children by three women, none of whom were his wife (two were sisters). There’s more, but I’ll leave it at that. In my opinion, his luster didn’t get a little dusty, it was completely tarnished.
