I have watch very closely the on-going drama that is the Army's search for the ideal sniper platform and system. In the mid '80s and early '90s, as part of the Army Marksmanship Team in New England (USAR/AMG) we tested numerous submissions for precision long distance shooting. I can tell you the process has been very long and tortured. I suspect it will be never ending. From the looks of it, the Barrett might be the answer, but with all weapon systems there is going to be many trade-off. I am still not convinced a semi-automatic will be as accurate as a bolt action rifle....but I would like to try one out. ;-)

Good morning Sir. I think rifles and calibers are like assholes and horseshoes, everyone has an opinion. My personal opinion is lets pick one round and get good with it. I like 7.62x51 across the board as you can use it at the squad level and as a sniper. Is the 5.56 lighter and faster, sure. Does the .338 Lapua reach out further yes. I am still active duty and just picked up an M1A tanker, 16" barrel. I would rather carry that than an M4. Everyone learns on the same round and that is all we need to supply. Just my two cents.
