This is great for the American taxpayer. The Falcon 9 rockets were advertised at $61.2M (all stages in FY14 dollars), with a projected savings of 30% by reusing a single booster (after expending the NRE on the booster retrieval systems) for an estimated cost of $42.8M (FY14 dollars). I have not seen the recalculation of savings by reusing boosters multiple times, but I have seen estimates that SpaceX is approaching $30M (FY14 dollars) cost-per-launch not figuring in profit-per-launch. Compare that to the Atlas V (401) cost of $125M (FY14 dollars), Delta-4M (4,2) cost of $154M (FY14 dollars). The most expensive Falcon rocket was the Falcon 9FTv1.2 at $132M, but SpaceX moved off that design after an orbital insertion failure and an inability to retrieve some of the components.
TLDR: SpaceX is awesome for rocket science and the American taxpayer.
