Does SpaceX have a worthy competitor? Or is Elon building a space monopoly?

I've been thinking about this of late as we read news of Boeing failing at its attempts to demonstrate its capability to launch a manned spacecraft to the space station. We the Taxpayers are funding a lot of has beens and wannabes while SpaceX is doing things that no one else has done before and doing them cheaper than ever before. Let's be honest. It's all about politics. Every time I hear someone say "The government oughta do something!", I cringe.
