Your military experience doesn’t define your next career.
This is an important lesson about life after the military.
Here are two of the most critical:
1. Don’t feel constrained by your military specialty:
- You get to decide what comes next and aren’t limited by the duties you performed in uniform.
- If you want to do something different in civilian life, start planning early and obtain the education, training or experience needed.
2. Don’t feel entitled by your rank:
- Just because you were a senior (NCO or officer), doesn’t mean that you’re going to start in a senior (executive) role.
- If you aspire to a senior position with industry, understand that you might need to take a temporary step back to gain experience in the specific industry or field of interest.
Remember, you’re not alone and veterans are willing to help, so ask them to be mentors.

Great advice. I do not necessarily wish to work within the Intelligence Community once I retire. I'm even working toward a Bachelorette degree in Intelligence Studies, so I do feel like Intel will be my best bet going into post Army career. So honestly I do feel constrained to my specialty. If you have any advice about how my degree major could prepare me for something else, then the advice is appreciated. I would like to stay working for our country whether as a contractor or DoD civilian.

I'm definitely avoiding intel when I retire. Intel people are weird as shit lol. I never planned to do intel. I came in after I got my Bachelor's in Journalism and I wanted to do that. But I was told I'd have to wait six months to go to basic to get it and I didn't want to wait. I said "What else do you have?" Counselor at MEPS looked around and said "This is the closest I could find." Shows me intelligence analyst. I said "What else do you have?" He said "Mechanic or cook." I said "I'll take the intel thing."
I don't regret it. I do wish I'd have been able to do PAO...I checked into reclassing but I was promotable to SFC and was told I'd have to give up my promotable status. I said nope.
I worked around the three letter agencies when I was at Meade...no thanks. I now have two Masters - one in Public Relations and one in Security Management. I wouldn't mind doing Security Management. I do wish I could afford to retire for good in 4 years and just be a Walmart greeter but...meh. I just want to get a decent job so I can take care of my daughter since she'll be 10 if I retire at 20.
