Interesting, guess the Northwest Passage dream still exists even with todays transportation.

It's a horrible place to fight a war, which is probably why you haven't seen many major conflicts in the area. I ended up on Adak during one of the big exercises during the 80's, when the Soviets were still the bad guys, and the weather was bad and made operations as much about surviving the weather as any kind of combat. And I was there in the "summer"!
The weather is so bad there that the Navy gave the island back to the Aleuts. The only reason they took it was there was already an airport and it had a McDonalds Franchise ;^).
