Back in 75 while stationed at Utapao Thailand, just after Viet Nam fell we had numerous Vietnamese jet fighter aircrafts with families aboard land on our strip at Utapao. The Thai Government told us to take the Aircraft out of thier country. The Bonhomme Richard with their helicopter's on board showed up off the coast and began ferrying the Vietnamese Fighters to her. We built a tent city along the beach to house the refugees. We processed them with physicals before allowing them to enter the US. Those that failed the physicals were sent to Guam to be treated and cured before entry into the US.

In 1975, that would have been the Aircraft Carrier Bonhomme Richard. (CVA-31) LHD-6 wasn't commissioned until 1998.

Shipyards will play a part in a war, but are not the sole determining factor. Any war with China will probably outlast the political and national will to keep prosecuting it. Quick strike, shock and awe won't work with a national opponent whose identity is so completely rolled up into their being a super power at all costs. Granted, I didn't go to War College...
