The African myths are not controversial. What is controversial is the portrayal of an idyllic Southern plantation life and stereotypical portrayals of Blacks in 'The Song of the South'.

Substitute idyllic with the word sanitized and you have my assessment of the movie. I saw it when I was young and it has been dusted off and re-released a couple of times. A big problem with this movie is the discussion we have had thus far. It is unclear why the characters of Remus and Aunt Tempy are so happy with their situation. The suggestion that not running away is not the right course of action is not an easily swallowed answer within the context of slavery. The use of white people in black face is objectionable today though often done back then. There is also the tar-baby term used in the film. The subservience of blacks to whites is clearly established in the film with the appearance that everyone is satisfied with it. While that subservience may have been the truth pre civil war, it was not have been the truth post civil war for African Americans, though the white ruling class continued to try to maintain that relationship. The fact that the words slave and slavery are never used in the movie might lead you to believe that the movie was a depiction of pre civil war but, in fact, the movie was supposed to be a depiction of post civil war. There were objections and even protesting about the films depictions of African Americans in 1946 when it was released. I don't think any of this was thought about at the time because no one was concerned about how those depictions would be seen then or down the road.

CMSgt Benjamin Hoover If Jack is fine with all of his bullcrap "Whites are the real victims of racism" and "Slavery wasn't really that bad" then I guess in your bass ackwards world I am the racist.

My first thought is since Song of the South has been blackballed from the Disney catalogue, you could probably count on your fingers on any given day how many Disney guests had seen the movie, much less been offended by it.
My second thought is it is their intellectual property and they can do as they please.

That's the funny thing. Most likely, the number of people who know anything about The Song of the South or Uncle Remus, is minuscule. They simply hear that it's controversial and agree without any basis for that judgment. This relates to another posting I just shared in which we learn that the most intolerant wins even though they are a minuscule minority

American Indians are not offended by the honoring of their courage or prowess, they are offended by the caricatures that are used.

But I've never heard of any Native American group making that complaint. Have you? I've heard individuals, spokespersons for non-Native groups...

Jack, my family includes both African Americans and American Indians. I only repeat what I have heard from them. They never objected to the use of Braves but didn't like the hatchet for instance. Just as a side note, our family members are Oneida Indians. As far as I know, they were America's first allies. The Oneida tribe has been fighting alongside American troops since 1777 during the Revolutionary War.
