Their actions can be defined as "acting in restraint of trade". At the most basic level, "restraint of trade" is any activity that prevents another party from conducting business as they normally would without such a restraint. Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890. The Sherman Act aims to eliminate restraints on trade and competition. States also have laws against restraints of trade that have strictly local impact.
