I'm throwing my bullshit flag.
Chloroquine is commonly used in Nigeria to treat Malaria.
Nigeria is a country where people are deeply suspicious of any medicine, as I saw first hand during the ebola outbreak.
What the CNN writer is saying is that people in another country who don't know any better because (reasons) hold the President of the United States in such regard (despite the constant drumbeat that he is racist against them and others) that they would run out and OD on a drug that many of them take regularly.
C'mon, man.
Give the narrative of orange man bad a rest for a while.

Lupus patients struggle to fill prescriptions after Trump touts drug for COVID-19: "This is...
Hydroxychloroquine has not been approved to treat coronavirus, and the nation's top infectious disease expert says there is no evidence it is effective.

MSgt Michael Bischoff - Really? Trump mentions this a couple days ago and now we're out of chloroquine? If this were true, it is a prescription drug, so that means that there is a spike in doctors prescriptions (or administering it themselves in a hospital), not that a bunch of people ran to Walgreens and bought out the supply.
OR
Maybe this is an advocacy group with nothing better to do, sounding the alarm that "their" drug is being used by people to mitigate coronavirus.

So here it comes again...
Look, I know a lot of people don't like the guy and think he's not doing the best job on this. That's cool. Be critical. But I don't think we need to go down the rabbit hole of some notional ODs in Nigeria (LOL, how many people OD in the USA on all sorts of shit daily?) or that lupus patients will run out of meds.
We have a situation where lots of real people die if this goes sideways. It would be helpful if the media would put out useful information, not this nonsense.
Don't worry; we'll have plenty of time to talk about how Joe would have done better.
Nothing personal, Mike. I enjoy our debates.

The governor of NY just ordered loads of this to give to patients. He stated so in his update over the weekend. I guess he is nuts too. One poisoning does not mean there is no potential for the treatment to do some good.
"New York will conduct trials for drugs that could be used to treat patients with the novel coronavirus who are seriously ill.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will send 10,000 doses of azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine to New York. Azithromycin is an antibiotic and hydroxychloroquine is used to treat malaria.
Cuomo spoke to President Donald Trump on Friday and expressed interest in conducting trials in New York.
"There is a theory that the drug treatment could be helpful," Cuomo said. "We have people who are in serious condition and (state Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker) feels comfortable, as well as a number of other health professionals, that in a situation where a person is in dire circumstance, try what you can." "

Right, so Cuomo is using it to treat/reverse the course of the virus which is exactly what has been said about it. The studies in France supported that and now we will get a full review of this therapy here in the U.S. Will it work? I don't know. Should we try it? On cases where we have at risk patients that are fully symptomatic and may be nearing respiratory distress, absolutely. It is not a silver bullet, it is not a vaccine and he never said it was.
Trump described the results they had in the tests/use in France. He isn't a doctor so any medical discussion he has is an opinion or observation, better informed than yours or mine as he is talking with the people working this issue every single day. He has pushed for it to be used NY is the hot spot for the virus in the US. They need to try a number of things to reduce the deaths. Is that a good enough reason to try the therapy? in my opinion yes, Cuomo and Trump agree as does the task force and the FDA is moving forward. You still need a doctor and a prescription to get it. It isn't like it is an over the counter remedy or something.
But I know for you, orange man bad. If Trump does it, supports it, endorsed it, it must be bad. Even Cuomo and Newsome are giving Trump strong positive marks for his support bit not Fransciso.
