I think Senator Alexander made a cogent point when he objected to a quick vote - who pays for this and what is the scope?
The bill as written would require employers to pay for up to 14 days of sick leave if the employee gets COVID-19. Sen Alexander says that if the government is going to mandate this, the government should pay for it. Frankly, I agree completely with that.
The sidebar about how House Democrats have been trying to mandate paid sick leave across the board is a different bill and a different discussion.

Yup, nothing like using a public health emergency to try and ram unfunded legislation through with limited debate.........then wonder later about why the unemployment rate is so high or that employers are leaving the country.

SPC Erich Guenther - No kidding. They Senate should take the House bill, gut it of stupid stuff, reform it into something lean and mean, and send it to conference committee to work out. That is how it is supposed to work; get this to something that addresses the issue and will pass.

1SG (Join to see) - Agree, I am not against the legislation but this is not a time to play the marxist Class Warfare game either. I expected a lot more from the likes of Patty Murray. Fund the legislation Federally and pass it. Fine with me and probably OK with most Democrats.

SPC Erich Guenther - Not only that, but the bill was passed by the House late afternoon yesterday (after how many days to work on this?), and by 8pm the same day they were putting out fundraising emails stating the GOP in the Senate was blocking the bill.
Call me a cynic, but it seems to me that the only thing the House has done of significance since the Corona virus popped up in December was impeachment. Real helpful, guys. Way to go.
Hell, the Iowa Caucus poll results got done faster than the House bill.

From Sen. Alexander from TN
"The idea of paid sick leave is a good idea. But if Washington, D.C., thinks it's a good idea, Washington, D.C., should pay for it," Alexander, the chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said from the Senate floor.
"It's not a cure for the coronavirus to put a big new expensive federal mandate on employers who are struggling in the middle of this matter," Alexander said.
I agree with him.
