Just to be clear, the point of taking the pay from one's retirement is to make it tax free as that portion is provided by the VA. So no one's pay is getting "cut" as some are stating. Granted, those who earn less than 50% are getting far less than those who make it to the magic 50% mark. I get it they get the full VA amount (CRDP... also tax free) as well as their full retirement. But we can't call it a pay cut. In 2004 Congress simply decided to set a standard of 50% for concurrent pay. How or why they came to that number I have no idea.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin: This particular act is addressing the issue of those who were medically retired prior to reaching the twenty year mark. Those who medically retired prior to reaching the twenty year mark have a portion of their "retirement pay" deducted for the amount paid to them from the VA. The remaining portion of their pay is determined on their High Three and number of years in the military. I've read the full bill which has been introduced into the House and it appears this act would require that even if a veteran never reached more than five years of military service prior to being medically retired, the veteran would receive full retirement pay as if the veteran had served twenty years as well as full VA pay. I have yet to see the version introduced into the Senate.

It works the same for reservist as well, I got 20% from the VA for my back and left knee, I just started getting my retired pay from the reserves and they take out what I get from the VA. To me this is bull, the 20% is for injuries and wear and tear I got during those 23 years, the retirement pay which for a reservist is not that much even with 3 tours, and I earned it by spending 23 years, 3 active tours, countless smaller tours on reserve orders, my final tour at 55 to Afghanistan.
