As a former KC-135 pilot, I agree with most of his article's assertions. Boeing screwed the pooch with the KC-46, underbidding it and under engineering it. The failures are multiple, from the boom controls to the flight management system. Take a look at a direct comparison between the 1950's era KC-135 and the "new" KC-46: Max Speed: KC-135: Mach 0.9, 597 mph KC-46: Mach 0.86, 570 mph ; Range: KC-135: 11,015 miles KC-46: 6,385 miles ; Service Ceiling: KC-135: 50,000 ft KC-46: 40100 ft. ; Fuel Capacity: KC-135: 203,000 lbs KC-46: 212,299 lbs ; Cargo Capacity: KC-135: 83,000 lbs KC-46: 65,000 lbs.
