I suspect that is just a matter of time before the taliban are back in power and supressing the people again. But my feeling about that has hardened over the years. We've been "training" the afghan army for what, around 17 years? If they cant get their shit together by then they never will.
The taliban make up a tiny portion of the population. They dont have fancy military equipment and training. We all hear about what proud and fierce fighters the afghan are. Well, if they really dont want to live under the taliban, its about time they turn that famed fighting prowess against them. Unless and until the afghan people decide that they would rather die fighting than live under taliban rule again, they will never prevail no matter how much assistance we give them. They are fine with us fighting and dying for their freedom, but dying themselves, not so much.
Yes, there are thousands of fine afghan men who have fought and died with us against the taliban. But until it is the overpowering desire of the population as a whole to defeat the Taliban, they never will. So lets get the fuck out of there. If the afghan people dont want to return to the harsh taliban rule, then fucking dont let them come into your villages and take over. Put as much effort killing taliban as you do stoning to death women who dont wear the right coverings, and you'll be successful.
But until the afghan people feel thst they should "live free or die" vs accommodating whoever is in power, then they will get what they deserve.

We have given them every opportunity and hundreds of billions in training and equipment and an example to follow. If they are uninterested in liberty, freedom and defending themselves from radicals there is not a lot we can do for them. They have to want it more than we do. To date, we have wanted it far more than them. It is time for the people there to stand up and be counted.

Cpl Julio Rosa Win? Lose? Only reason we went after the Taliban was for Protecting Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda is No Longer the Issue in the Region. I Guess You could say We Won? Kind of a Hollow Victory though. More to the Point as some noted on another forum I was talking with We're Leaving the Afghans the same way We Left the South Vietnamese. They're Screwed and I think they Know It.

Thank you for your thoughts, with all the money spent on this war, do you believe it was worth it? Will the Taliban cease back control of Afghanistan? What will this mean for the dynamic of the Middle East? Where there be peace or will the Middle East spiral out of control?

Cpl Julio Rosa - I'd Like to Hope We made some change but I Highly Doubt It. Still Too many Tribal, Religious Fanatics, That's Always a Problem. I Don't Care which Faith Either, "Orthodox" "Fundamentalist" Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhist.

Additional similarity between Afghan and South Vietnamese government is corrupt ineffectiveness. Afghan government is weak due to graft and infighting among tribes. South Vietnamese government collapsed due to its image as a French puppet and its favoritism of minority Catholics over majority Buddhists.

After 19 years of war and no real decisive end in sight it seems apparent the government in Afghanistan is either unwilling or unable to run the country, provide security and has little or no ability to rally their people. We have given them all of the equipment, training and time they should have needed, and then some. We have lost far too many lives in the effort on their behalf. We defeated Nazism and The Empire of Japan in 4 years.
You have to want freedom, liberty and the right of self determination. You have to be willing to fight for it because there is almost always someone that will want to take it away from you. I hope this forced the parties to learn to live together and that they can have a government that allows freedom for all not control by a few. Time will tell. We have done far more than we should have done.
