This one competes with Verdun for battlefields I have visited. My guide of Malinta tunnel showed us a burned out bone of a Japanese soldier, likely a femur was all that was left. My GF at the time and I spent two nights there and felt it was hunted. I am sure we will take our kids back someday.

I would love to get the Japanese perspective of being stuck on a large island with little food, supplies, and water.

MAJ Ken Landgren - I am pretty certain they would tell much the same in 1945 that US forces said in 1942. There are still Germans buried at Fort Duramount at Verdun; names and faces change but many of the stories do not.

A few thoughts.

- I believe we had air supremacy at that point as we destroyed the last Japananese aircraft carriers a year earlier in the Battle of the Philippine sea.

- The Marine Corps was recognized for the multitude of amphibious landings in WWII, but the Army conducted amphibious landings as well.

- The Japanese army wanted maximum expansion in the Pacific, but the Navy argued against it and lost. In the end, the expansion was similar to the German expansion in WWII. A military objective can't be unlimited expansion.

- The current president of the Philippines wants the US out of the country. However, many Filipinos have a high regard for Americans as there's a collective knowledge that we retook the Philippines and gave the country back to them.

Many Filipinos are still upset the Philippines did not become a US state. Duarte can say what he wants but like many, eventually he will be out and the strong family connections between Filipinos and Americans will continue.
