We learn as we go. When I was in college, and viruses were virtually unknown, except for a few common varieties - T Phages were one of the ones we studied. Not the giant ones from this article, but the ones known back then. I always thought they looked like a lunar landing module, or Alien landing craft with injector tube. LOL
Nobody back then even knew if Viruses were "Alive". They got a world famous Scientist (sadly I forgot her name but not her brilliance) She spent a year and assembled some of the best minds around to figure out if viruses were "Alive." Her conclusion was a play on a famous quote about roses:
"A Virus, is a virus, is a virus."
