I think the bones are there, but the people implementing it should tread lightly, especially at first. TAPS was congressionally mandated, and I know more people that have looked at it as a week away from the office than they did an opportunity to create a plan for themselves moving forward. I can see the same thing happening here.
We have to do better with promoting mental health as a whole, and removing the stigma associated with it. People lose sight of the fact that your health covers an entire spectrum, and isn't something you can just take a pill for. It goes beyond the annual CBT click-a-thons of training for suicide awareness. It goes beyond the "mandatory fun" of wing stand downs. We as leaders have to take point and show our people we truly care about them as human beings, and we have to be ready at all levels to appropriately address needs when they arise, and not wait for the big bad symptoms to start.
