SGT Gregory Lawritson - Preparing for the next war is challenging as the variables can be new doctrine, friendly capabilities, weapons systems, and enemy capability. Sometimes it is a hit or miss proposition. To illustrate the point in WWII the Marines got it right by training for amphibious operations before the war. The Army Air Force opined strategic bombing can be accomplished without fighter escorts. To this end, they lost thousands of bombers.

The brilliance of blitzkrieg was realized by Germany conducting a military wide AAR of WWI. What was planned, what happened, and how to shrink the delta. WWI was predominantly a stationary war and the Germans wanted a solution this problem of lack of maneuver. The AAR became the harbinger of blitzkrieg which focused on fast and lethal maneuver and a combined arms approach.

In my humble opinion, Patton took it one step further by using recon and fighter planes to attrit the enemy before he decisively engaged them and facilitated the frenetic pace of his army. Many German units could not retreat fast enough.
