I didn't know the USA had annexed Canada --- but that's the only way I know "a former Canadian Armed Forces reservist" could be a "U S veteran".
BTW -- How is it that this character is a "former ... reservist"? Discharged? Under what conditions?

SSG Robert Mark Odom - I never assumed you wrote it. The byline was given as: "The Ledger, Lakeland, Fla. | By Michael Kunzelman and Mike Balsamo"

It says he was either in bootcamp or supposed to go to boot when the government found his white supremacist background and booted him. I don't believe that would make him a Veteran though.

MSgt David Hoffman - I don't recall reading this paragraph re the background of a second member of the group, besides the military background of Mathews, the "former Canadian reservist".
From the (current version of the) article:
"Mathews was a combat engineer in the Canadian Army Reserve. Lemley was a "cavalry scout" in the U.S. Army, according to a court filing."
IIRC the original article said Mathews was an "Air Force reservist" in Canada. Now it reads "Armed Forces reservist".
Perhaps the article was edited/updated. If not, I owe an "OOOPS!" to all.

I'm not saying the guy is or isn't, just that I think the term is used too loosely.

While that is disappointing, it is not really surprising. The military is a diverse organization and as such covers the gamut of personal opinions and religious and political leanings. Having served together, that kind of attitude is less likely among veterans, in my opinion
